Fourth Quarterly Conference Tonight At The Methodist Church The fourth quarterly conference of the Zebulon Methodist Church will meet tonight (Thursday) at 8:00 in the Fellowship Hall of the Church. The Rev. Graham S. Eu bank, district superintendent of the Raleigh District, will preside over the conference and reports will be received from the Sun day School, WSCS, MYF, Church Lay Leader, Commissions on Edu cation, Missions, Evangelism, Stewardship, Worship and Chris tian Social Concerns. The trus tees will also report on the church’s progress in buildings, etc. All stewards, trustees, and ex officio stewards are members of the Quarterly Conference and are urged to be present. Contest Winners Are Speakers At Rotary Club Betsy Alford and Waddell Gay were featured speakers at the Wednesday night Rotary meeting last week, giving their winning talks on world peace. Topic of the Wakelon students’ talks was “The United Nations and World Peace.” / Miss Alford won first place and Waddell Gay second place in the INSURANCE The Best in Life, Hospital, Group, Accident and Health WALTER R. With her sponsor, Mrs. Stanley Seago, Miss Alford visited New York, the United Nations build ■ ing, and Washington, D. C. Part of their expenses were paid by the Rotarians as first place award ! in the contest. Mrs. Seago introduced both*stu dents, saying, “Our young people are aware of conditions as they exist today. They (our young people) are intelligent and they have good ideas.” Barris Davis introduced M'rss. Seago, and commended her on the outstanding debate and public speaking program being conducted at Wakelon School. Poppy Day To Be Observed May 27 The American Legion Auxiliary announced yesterday that 1961 Poppy Day will be observed here Saturday, May 27. Auxiliary poppy chairman, Mrs. Wilma Lanier, said the annual observance is held to honor the more than 500,000 Americans who died, and nearly 1,000,000 Ameri cans who were wounded in both World WaTs and the Korean con flict. “Memorial poppies, made by disabled veterans of this country’s past three wars, will be worn as a memorial to our war dead and as a tribute to the disabled,” Mrs. Lanier said. She added that the red paper poppies supplied in this area were made at the Veteran’s Hospital in Durham. The American Legion Auxiliary said Poppy Day has one basic pur pose: to provide a personal means of honoring the nation’s war dead. Volunteer workers from the Aux iliary and other groups have do nated their time to hold this an nual program. Junior Woman's Club To Hold Last Meeting The last meeting of the year for the Junior Woman’s Club will be held Tuesday night. May 16, Mrs. Bobby Sherron, president, has announced. Featured speaker for the evening will be Mrs. Jack Mitchell, county health nurse, who will speak on “Why Have Polio?” The meeting will get underway at 8 o’clock, with Mrs. Howard Phelps and Mrs. Wayne Perry co hostesses. Eastern Carolina Singing Convention To Be Held May 28 The Wilson Junior Chamber of Commerce have announced prep arations are underway for the 21st Eastern Carolina Singing Convention to be held in the Wil son Stadium on Sunday, May 28. The famed songfest will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will continue through the day. Many fine singing groups have already reported that they will participate on the program, and many others are expected to re port. This annual event draws 10 to 12 thousand people each year from all across North Carolina and ad joining states. Kindergarten Pupils To Have Graduation Pupils of Mrs. Howard Bunn’s kindergarten will present their graduation program, “ So We Grow,” Wednesday evening, May 17, at 8 o’clock in Wakelon School auditorium. The closing date of the Kinder garten will be June 2, Mrs. Bunn has announced. She added that she is now taking applications for enrollments in the 1961-62 kinder | garten classes. The following • pupils will be gowned and wear mortar boards during the graduation ceremonies: Melissa Jane Beck, Sherrie Blackley, Mary Amelia Bryant, John Zebulon Davis, Charles Whit ' ley Estes, Pamela Elizabeth Hicks, ! George Riggsby Massey III, Fred i die Wayne Pace, Catherine Saw ! yer, Norma Helen Screws, Judy Michele Thomas and Jane Eliza beth Tippett. The public is invited to attend these exercises. Guest Minister Dr. Robert Newton, head of Campbell College religion depart ment, will be the guest minister at Zebulon Baptist Church Sun day. The church is now without a pastor. Dr. John Wayland, who served as interim pastor, finished his program with the church last Sunday. COLORED NEWS By Mrs. Lizzie B. Askew Woman’s Day was observed last Sunday at Wakefield Baptist Church. The entire event was car ried on by women. E. J. Tartler of Raleigh will give an organ recital at Wakefield Baptist Church the fourth Sunday in May at 6:00 in the afternoon. The public is cordially invited. Mrs. Genevia Todd Eatman has returned home from Brooklyn, N. Y., where she spent several months with relatives and friends. Shepard School PTA held its fi nal meeting Monday night.
